The Adult Learn to Row (LTR) program is aimed at anyone 18 years and older. Our program objective is to introduce basic rowing techniques and boathouse routine. Once the LTR has been successfully completed, you will have the option to join the club and continue improving your skills. Membership allows you to row a minimum of three sessions a week until the season ends (usually late September). Note: Applicants are expected to know how to swim.
2011 Learn-to-Row Dates:
July 4th to July 27th & August 8th to 31st (8 session per program, weather permitting)
Mondays and Wednesdays from from 7:00-8:30 p.m.
First session: Dry-land
The first session is offered FREE of charge as it involves only familiarizing rowers with basic elements or rowing. This involves a tour of the boathouse, instruction on the anatomy of the boats and various oars, as well as carrying and handling boats to and from the water. Participants will also spend time learning rowing technique on club ergometers (rowing machines), and dock rowing with actual to master the proper mechanics necessary and used while rowing on water. The viewing of a 40-minute safety video is mandatory at the start of the second session. No rower is aloud on the water until this and registration is complete due to insurance reasons. Completed LTR application forms and monies are handed in at either the end of Dry-land training or at the start of the second session.
On water sessions
On water sessions take place after dry-land training, viewing of the safety video, and registration are complete. Participants will be placed into rowing shells with experienced rowers. They will have the opportunity to row on Lake Ramsey for thirty - sixty minutes, depending on weather conditions practicing rowing technique with other participants. Instruction and correction of technique will be given from both the cox (driver of row boat), and coach/safety boat. Participants will wear a "fanny pack" type personal flotation device on their waists during on water sessions.
Participants will have the opportunity to receive instruction on the proper use of an ergometer before and after their "on water" session. Membership allows you access to club ergs during club operating hours. On stormy weather occasions when we are not able to row on water we invite LTR participants to come and practice row technique.
Fees
Adult LTR fees are $100.00. This fee
covers operating and insurance costs. If you so choose to join the club after
or during LTR the cost of the program will be deducted from membership cost =
$250.00 to row until September to early October.
All SRC Programs are run entirely by volunteers. This keeps costs down, and fosters a sense of ownership in the club's success. If you decide to join the club, we strongly encourage you to row with new LTR participants to help provide encouragement and a chance for you to gain more time on the water. See Volunteer Opportunities for other ways to offer your time within the club.
Transition
Once you become a member we offer new rowers the chance to try new boats besides what was used for LTR program. Sculling (rowing with two oars) options will be considered based on ability and desire. We ask that any new members make an effort to connect with current members by suggesting ‘spare' capability, which entails that you can row for a crew if one of their current crewmembers is absent. This is a great way to make relationships with current members and perhaps start a new crew. All boats that are used are to be requested by method of filling a request form at the start of the month and submitted to Boat Allocation for scheduling purposes.
We strongly encourage that all new
rowers remain in a boat such as 4x or 8x man shell due to balance and steering
issues. Single and double shells are limited amongst members and require ample
practice to row effectively without concern for safety or lack of enjoyment.
Participation in regattas is always
optional. There is only one "in house" competition and it is held
annually on Lake Ramsey, near the end of August. There are no additional fees
to attend this fun event. Participation in regattas outside the club is at your
own discretion and expense. Please register your intent to attend a
regatta with the club's executive and to obtain necessary documentation.
See Rowing Links for provincial and national
regatta information.
