Thomas_Barbara_AGM_08.jpgActing upon a request from adaptive athlete Minna Mettinen, Thomas Merritt volunteered to pursue the possibility of developing an Adaptive Rowing program at our club. This has involved many hours successfully pursuing grants and monies for the program, working with adaptive athletes and adapting equipment to their needs, as well as inviting members of the Independent Living Resource Centre community to partake in the program. Personally supporting two of these athletes to realize their goals of rowing competitively, Thomas has deservedly earned this trophy that recognizes his commitment to go “above and beyond” a volunteer’s efforts to promote the sport of rowing in this community.

Club president Barbara Courtin presents 2008 recipient Thomas Merritt with trophy.

The Spirit of Rowing Volunteer Trophy

A_Moulton_Trophy.jpg Presented annually to the individual or crew that has promoted the sport of rowing inside the club and/or the rowing community at large. This trophy continues to serve as a testament to those people whose volunteer efforts go “above and beyond” in the service of their club. Each February the club’s Executive reviews the actions and contributions of nominees to determine the newest recipient of the Spirit of Rowing Trophy. That winner is then contacted by the President and invited to attend the award presentation at the Annual General Meeting held in March. Recipients are allowed to keep the trophy in their homes for one year.

Judith Woodsworth participated in the 2004 Learn to Row program, and promptly joined the club as a member. Since that time, Judith has been an active ambassador for the sport, supporting the launch of a University Learn to Row program, and its subsequent expansion into an Interuniversity program.

As President of Laurentian University, Judith also became an international ambassador for the sport when she visited China in 2006.

This trophy is presented annually to the winning crew of the Club’s seasonal regatta held on Lake Ramsey. It was first presented in September 2000, the year Loreen lost her courageous battle with cancer. This trophy is a tribute to Loreen’s love of rowing, as well as her commitment to spreading the joy of competition.

Loreen is pictured holding her trophy, and flashing her infectious smile.

The High School Trophy is presented to the winning 8+ at the annual SRC Junior Development Regatta, held each June at the completion of the High School Rowing Program.

This trophy proudly graced the halls of Macdonald-Cartier High School for the first five years of the program's history but will spend 2008 in its new home, Lo-Ellen Park S.S.

The Woodsworth Cup

The Judith Woodsworth Cup is awarded annually to the winning crew of Laurentian University's Learn to Row Regatta held on Lake Ramsey. The Regatta celebrates the end of the University Learn to Row Program in late September. Dr. Judith Woodsworth, President of Laurentian University, has been a staunch supporter and promoter of rowing as a part of the university's culture, and this cup recognizes her great support of the program at L.U.
